Whereas previously prospective parents have not managed to find out the baby’s sex, the ultrasound examination at 18 weeks of pregnancy, most often shows the answer to this question accurately to 90%.
But ultrasound examination is not assigned to determine the gender on this term, most often between 18 and 22 weeks it can be used to identify congenital malformations of the cardiovascular system, heart disease, Down’s syndrome. During the examination the doctor will also make a conclusion about the state of the placenta, assess the risk of possible deviations and the need for adjustments, fix the head circumference and the baby’s belly, it’s front-occipital size and dimensions of the long bones.
18 Weeks Pregnant: a doctor will recommend making the analysis of the urine sample, which can be used to assess kidney function. You may also have to make the blood test to rule out the development of anemia of a future mother. A small number of red blood cells and low hemoglobin levels may be the indicators of this disease. In addition to the analysis pallor, fatigue, dizziness and fainting of the expectant mother may also indicate anemia.
In order to detect chromosomal abnormalities expectant mother may be asked to make a screening comprehensive study – the triple test. The test received this name in order to study in parallel the three markers:
- the level of human chorionic gonadotropin;
- levels of alpha-fetoprotein;
- the level of unconjugated estriol.
Any deviations from the norm indicators may indicate that the child may develop Down’s syndrome, hydrocephalus and other malformations. In this case, a doctor may order amniotsentoza – further study of amniotic fluid, in order to confirm or refute suspicions.
